SUCCESS!!! Trick-or-Treat 2025 was our best Halloween yet!

Dear reader, you may recall that my last Blog post (Trick or Treat 2025 (Part One) was all about my idea of presenting trick-or-treaters with a choice: one covered bowl that said "Trick" and another that said "Treat". The "Trick" bowl had veggies, and the "Treat" bowl had candy. We weren't totally sure how it would be received, but forged ahead.

As it started to get dark, four of us gathered on the front porch in costume ready to trick and treat kids as they came by.

The first kids walked up the sidewalk and didn't really notice the big cardboard paintings decorating the yard with images of veggies and candy bar wrappers. They held out their bags and said, "Trick or Treat!". And I said, "That's my question to you! Do you want a trick (and I showed them that bowl) or a treat (and my husband showed them the other bowl)."

They were confused at first, and some of them really took time to consider their options.

It was adorable!

And the face of the first kid who chose "trick" only to find ziplock baggies of carrots and broccoli was hilarious! It was a mix of surprise and disappointment that made us all laugh. Of course, we offered them the "treat" bowl as well, so they eventually smiled and left laughing, too.

But the biggest surprise was that many of the kids LIKED the veggies! Most of them were young girls, and they snapped up the veggies with big smiles and even bigger claims that they LIKE broccoli! One girl immediately ate the broccoli and then, about 30 minutes later, came back for seconds.

The veggies were so popular that we called a 5th friend who was on her way to stop and get more because within 30 minutes, we were running out!

Several people commented on the cardboard yard decorations and one boy wanted to know if he could take the TWIX one home with him.

Overall, it was a fun night for everyone, and afterwards, a friend did a little research to find that generally speaking, the houses that give out things other than candy at Halloween are often the most popular and remembered year to year.

So if YOU are thinking about what to do for the next Halloween, get creative and think beyond candy!
